Costa Rica: good to know

  • What visitors pay. UNHCR's Costa Rica help site says anyone in an emergency always has the right to be treated in the public system (the Caja, CCSS), and that a person without insurance is billed for the services after being treated. It also says people living with HIV have the right to uninterrupted antiretroviral treatment and can get state-paid insurance if they have no other cover. The page is written for refugees and asylum seekers and does not mention tourists, HIV testing or PEP.

Emergency number: 911
