United States: good to know

  • PEP in this country. PEP must start within 72 hours of exposure. The Night Clinic at Family Health Centers of San Diego's Hillcrest health centre lists PEP among its walk-in evening services (Monday to Thursday, 5–9pm). At other times, go to a hospital emergency department and say you need PEP for HIV exposure.
  • What visitors pay. US care is rarely free for visitors. The San Diego LGBT Community Center says its HIV, hepatitis C and STI screening is free and offered regardless of immigration status. Family Health Centers of San Diego says HIV testing at The Night Clinic is free, STI tests are low-cost, and fees may be waived if you cannot pay; no amounts are published.
