About

The 24-hour emergency department nearest the city centre, for when you need PEP and Glasgow's sexual health service is closed; the health board's sexual health service tells people to attend A&E out of hours for a first supply.

This clinic doesn’t advertise itself as LGBTQ+ friendly. Most clinics don’t, so this isn’t a sign that it’s unwelcoming. If you’ve been, tell us how you were treated.

United Kingdom: good to know

  • What visitors pay. Scotland sets its own rules on charging overseas visitors. Scottish Government guidance to the NHS (2010) says emergency treatment in an A&E department is free to everyone regardless of where they live, until the person is admitted as an inpatient or registered as an outpatient, and that treatment for sexually transmitted infections at a specialised sexual health clinic is exempt from charges for all overseas visitors. The same 2010 guidance limited the exemption for HIV to the test and counselling; the rules may have changed since, so ask the clinic.
  • PEP in this country. For PEP after a possible sexual exposure to HIV, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde's Sandyford service says to phone 0141 211 8130 as soon as possible (Monday to Thursday 8:45am to 4pm, Friday to 2:45pm, closed 12:15pm to 1pm); same-day appointments are usually offered. After 4pm it says to attend A&E for a first supply of PEP, with follow-up back at Sandyford. PEP must start within 72 hours and works best within 24.
