United Kingdom: good to know

  • What visitors pay. Wales has its own charging rules for overseas visitors. Welsh Government guidance for hospitals in Wales lists as exempt from charges treatment given in, or as the result of a referral from, a sexually transmitted diseases clinic, and says that for HIV this exemption applies only to the initial diagnostic test and associated counselling. Cardiff and Vale's health board says treatment in an A&E department is free to everyone until you are admitted or given an outpatient appointment.
  • PEP in this country. Cardiff and Vale's sexual health service says that if you are worried you were exposed to HIV through sex in the last 72 hours you should call 02921 835208, Monday to Friday 09:00-15:00; at weekends, out of hours and on bank holidays you get PEP by visiting your local Emergency Department. PEP must be taken within 72 hours, ideally within 24.
