This clinic doesn’t advertise itself as LGBTQ+ friendly. Most clinics don’t, so this isn’t a sign that it’s unwelcoming. If you’ve been, tell us how you were treated.

Turkey: good to know

  • PEP in this country. Red Ribbon Istanbul says Türkiye has no regular PEP programme for individuals: if you think you have had a high-risk exposure and are still within 72 hours, go without delay to a hospital that has an infectious diseases department, preferably a central one, and speak to an infectious diseases specialist, ideally one who follows HIV patients. PEP is taken for 28 days without a break, and some people pay for the medicine themselves.
  • PEP in this country. Pozitif Yaşam says an infectious diseases specialist must review your risk before PEP is started, that it must begin within 72 hours and lasts 28 days, and that the prescribed medicines are not covered by health insurance even when a doctor prescribes them: you buy them at a pharmacy and pay yourself.
  • What visitors pay. Red Ribbon Istanbul says Türkiye has no HIV-related entry restrictions and no testing on entry, that almost all antiretroviral medicines are available, and that people without a Turkish social security number must pay for medication and all HIV-related hospital costs themselves. It advises bringing enough medication for your whole stay.
  • Legal & safety. The UK government's travel advice says same-sex sexual activity is legal in Turkey but same-sex relationships are not legally recognised, that parts of the country are socially conservative and public displays of affection may attract unwanted attention, and that since 2015 the authorities have banned or dispersed Pride events.
