Mexico: good to know

  • PEP in this country. AHF México says PEP can prevent HIV infection if it is started within the first 72 hours, and that you can go to any IMSS hospital or clinic, which should provide it free whether or not you are insured with IMSS. The page does not mention foreign visitors, so ask on arrival how this applies to you. After sexual violence it points people to a Centro de Justicia para las Mujeres or the Fiscalía instead.
  • What visitors pay. Mexico's national HIV centre, Censida, says the public CAPASITS and SAIH centres give comprehensive medical care and free antiretroviral medicines to everyone with HIV who is not covered by a social security scheme such as IMSS or ISSSTE, along with psychological care, nursing, social work and laboratory tests. It does not say how this applies to someone visiting the country.
