About

Japan's national HIV centre in Shinjuku publishes, in English, how to get PEP after sex, including out of hours through the hospital's emergency room, and exactly what it costs when paid in full yourself.

This clinic doesn’t advertise itself as LGBTQ+ friendly. Most clinics don’t, so this isn’t a sign that it’s unwelcoming. If you’ve been, tell us how you were treated.

Services

HIV lab test — Yes
Blood draw; result in days; picks up recent infection sooner than rapid tests.
An HIV blood test is done before PEP is given; this is not a walk-in testing service.
Hepatitis B & C test — Yes
Blood test.
Hepatitis B and C follow-up tests after a higher-risk exposure, charged separately.
PEP (after HIV exposure) — Yes
Emergency 28-day medicine; must start within 72 hours.
For unprotected sex within the past 72 hours with a partner who may have HIV. Out of hours the page says an emergency room doctor might give PEP medicine for one or a few days only, and you return to the ACC clinic on a weekday for the full assessment.
