Japan: good to know
- PEP in this country. Japan's national AIDS Clinical Center says PEP after sex is not an approved use of HIV medicines in Japan, so health insurance does not cover it and you pay the whole cost yourself; at its own Tokyo clinic that is a 20,000 yen first consultation plus 10,000 yen a day for the medicine (280,000 yen for 28 days), before tax. Some private clinics prescribe imported generic medicines for much less. PEP must start within 72 hours.
