Italy: good to know

  • PEP in this country. Italy's Ministry of Health and national health institute say PEP must start within 48 hours of the exposure, lasts four weeks and is prescribed by a specialist after a risk assessment. In Rome, the Spallanzani infectious diseases institute says its Stanza 13 clinic offers PEP free of charge and without a prescription; the community service Roma Checkpoint lists Spallanzani as providing PEP around the clock.
  • What visitors pay. Two public clinics in Rome publish what is free. San Gallicano's STI clinic says the visit and the tests and treatment for HIV, syphilis and gonorrhoea are free, while other STI tests carry the regional co-payment (ticket). Spallanzani's Stanza 13 says all its activities are free. Neither says whether this also applies to visitors without an Italian health card.
