Sexual health clinics in Italy
HIV testing in Italy is free and anonymous at most public health services, and the national health institute says foreigners can test on the same terms as Italians. Public hospital STI clinics in the big cities take walk-ins without a referral, and community checkpoints offer free rapid tests. What a visitor without an Italian health card pays for treatment or PEP is rarely published.

- PEP in this country
Italy works to a 48-hour window, shorter than the 72 hours used elsewhere: official guidance says PEP must start within 48 hours, lasts four weeks and is prescribed by a specialist after a risk assessment. The usual route is a hospital emergency department (Pronto Soccorso) or a specialist HIV centre. In Rome, the Spallanzani institute offers PEP free and without a prescription; in Milan, Niguarda hospital gives it only after assessment in its emergency department. In Florence and Naples, go to the nearest Pronto Soccorso.
- What visitors pay
Testing is often free; the rest depends on the clinic. In Rome, San Gallicano says the visit plus tests and treatment for HIV, syphilis and gonorrhoea are free while other STI tests carry the regional co-payment (ticket), and Spallanzani says all its activities are free. In Milan, Niguarda's STI tests are free without a GP referral and Milano Check Point's rapid tests are free. None of them says whether this covers visitors without an Italian health card, so ask first.

The national health institute says the HIV test is free and needs no prescription in most public health services, can be taken anonymously, and that foreign nationals can take it on the same terms as Italian citizens, even without a residence permit.
