Where To Test

Sexual health clinics in Germany

Listings in Germany are city public health offices (Gesundheitsamt), community checkpoints run by Aidshilfe and gay men's groups, and hospital emergency departments for PEP. By law every public health office offers STI counselling and testing that can be used anonymously, and several test free or for a few euros. Few services say anything about visitors; Cologne's health office has a session for people with only travel insurance.

PEP in this country

Sources here give a shorter window than 72 hours. Deutsche Aidshilfe says PEP can still be tried in the first two days after a risk and that every hour counts, so go straight to a hospital emergency department; its PEP map lists the hospitals in each city. Aidshilfe Köln says ideally within 24 hours and no later than 48; the out-of-hours practice at Uniklinik Köln gives the first doses and an HIV specialist practice the rest of the four-week course. It adds that German insurers pay only in justified emergencies and does not say what others pay. In Hamburg, Hein & Fiete says ideally within 2 hours, at the latest within 24, possibly up to 48.

What visitors pay

Prices are set city by city. The health offices in Cologne and Hamburg test free and anonymously, and Hamburg's free testing also runs at the gay checkpoint Hein & Fiete. Munich's city advice centre is free except for the optional rapid HIV test at €26, but its page addresses Munich citizens and does not mention visitors. Cologne's booking page has a separate session for people with no health insurance valid in Germany, including those with only travel insurance. Community checkpoints usually charge per test: Checkpoint BLN in Berlin says €5 to €25 and free on low income, and Munich's Checkpoint charges €26 for HIV and €60 for a full package.

Testing

German law (Infektionsschutzgesetz, section 19) has every public health office (Gesundheitsamt) offer counselling and testing for sexually transmitted infections, and says these services can be used anonymously. In individual cases the office may also treat. The law does not set prices; each city decides.

City pages carry the local detail: which clinic, which hospital, and what it costs there.
