About

The national infectious diseases institute's public PrEP clinic says it also gives PEP after a recent sexual exposure, tests for HIV, syphilis, hepatitis, chlamydia and gonorrhoea and treats what it finds, though it is on the Fiocruz campus well outside the tourist areas.

This clinic doesn’t advertise itself as LGBTQ+ friendly. Most clinics don’t, so this isn’t a sign that it’s unwelcoming. If you’ve been, tell us how you were treated.

Brazil: good to know

  • What visitors pay. Brazil's Ministry of Health says a foreign tourist with a health problem can also seek care in the urgent-care network of the public health system (SUS), including SAMU ambulances on 192 and 24-hour UPA units, and that these services are free. The page does not list any documents a tourist must show.
  • PEP in this country. The Ministry of Health says PEP is offered free of charge by the SUS, must start within 72 hours of the exposure and is taken for 28 days.

Emergency number: 192
