Brazil: good to know

  • What visitors pay. Brazil's Ministry of Health says a foreign tourist with a health problem can also seek care in the urgent-care network of the public health system (SUS), including SAMU ambulances on 192 and 24-hour UPA units, and that these services are free. The page does not list any documents a tourist must show.
  • PEP in this country. The Ministry of Health says PEP is offered free of charge by the SUS, must start within 72 hours of the exposure and is taken for 28 days. For Florianópolis, the local LGBTQ+ guide Guia Gay Floripa, citing the Ministry's STI/AIDS department, listed Hospital Nereu Ramos in Agronômica (Rua Rui Barbosa, 800) as giving PEP 24 hours a day; that list dates from 2016, so call ahead or ask any 24-hour UPA.

Emergency number: 192
