Australia: good to know

  • PEP in this country. Healthdirect, the Australian Government’s health advice service, says PEP is available from emergency departments in most public hospitals, sexual health clinics and some doctors who specialise in HIV, and that outside office hours you should go to the nearest hospital emergency department. getpep.info lists the Royal Perth Hospital sexual health clinic and South Terrace Clinic in Fremantle as supplying PEP at a reduced cost to people without Medicare.
  • What visitors pay. Royal Perth Hospital charges overseas visitors without Medicare from A$519 to A$2,470 for an emergency department visit and A$391 for an outpatient consultation, and asks for a passport, insurance details and a credit card. Visitors from countries with a reciprocal health care agreement (the UK, Ireland, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Belgium, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Slovenia, and Italy and Malta for the first six months) are covered for essential treatment.
