Healthdirect, the Australian Government's health advice service, says PEP is available from emergency departments in most public hospitals, sexual health clinics and some doctors who specialise in HIV, and that outside office hours you should go to the nearest hospital emergency department. Each state we cover has a PEP phone line that tells you where to go: New South Wales 1800 737 669, Victoria 1800 889 887, Queensland 13 43 25 84, South Australia 1800 022 226 and Western Australia 1300 767 161. getpep.info marks which clinics supply PEP at a reduced cost to people without Medicare.

Our sources give no national rule for visitors. Public sexual health clinics are often free without a Medicare card: Melbourne Sexual Health Centre says it is free for everyone, including international visitors, and public clinics in Sydney and Brisbane say no Medicare card is needed. Community and GP clinics charge people without Medicare more; Adelaide's SHINE SA charges the full consultation cost and does not publish it. Royal Perth Hospital charges visitors A$519 to A$2,470 for an emergency visit, but those from countries with a reciprocal health care agreement, such as the UK, Ireland and New Zealand, are covered for essential treatment.
