PEP in this country

Burnett Foundation Aotearoa says to go to a GP, an after-hours clinic or a hospital emergency department as soon as possible, within 72 hours. Some pharmacies stock PEP, so call ahead. It is free only for people who are eligible for public healthcare and meet the funding criteria. Others can ask the doctor for a prescription and pay for the pills themselves at a pharmacy.

What visitors pay

Health New Zealand says short-term visitors are generally not eligible for publicly funded healthcare, with limited exceptions for Australian and UK residents who need immediate treatment and for accident injuries covered by ACC, so expect to pay. Sexual Wellbeing Aotearoa, in Auckland and Wellington, charges non-residents NZ$165 for an STI screen without symptoms and NZ$200 with symptoms, plus laboratory fees. In Queenstown, Queenstown Medical Centre charges overseas visitors NZ$180 for a first sexual health clinic visit and at least NZ$300 for a doctor's consultation, paid before you are seen.

Testing

Health New Zealand says sexual health clinics offer STI testing and treatment, condoms and HIV advice including PEP and PrEP, and that most are free but some charge a fee, so check with the clinic. For Wellington it points to the Wellington Sexual Health Service listing on Healthpoint. For Otago and Southland it points to the Just the Facts clinic finder, which lists no public sexual health clinic in Queenstown, only Queenstown Medical Centre; the nearest free public clinics it lists are in Dunedin and Invercargill.
