Netherlands: good to know

  • PEP in this country. GGD Rotterdam-Rijnmond says to start PEP within 72 hours. In office hours (Monday to Friday 08:30–17:00) phone its sexual health centre on 010 443 80 21 and say you have a question about PEP. Monday to Friday 17:00–22:00 and at weekends and on public holidays 08:00–22:00, phone the central number of the Maasstad Ziekenhuis, 010 291 19 11. The page names no service between 22:00 and 08:00.
  • What visitors pay. Dutch health insurance covers PEP (it counts towards the excess). GGD Rotterdam-Rijnmond says people with foreign insurance pay for the whole PEP course themselves at the pharmacy and claim it back afterwards: expect about €1,000. The GGD's own STI tests are free and anonymous but only for people who meet its criteria (under 25, men and other people with a penis who have sex with men, people with symptoms); everyone else is pointed to a GP or a self-test. Rotterdam's private clinics charge from €115 for a chlamydia and gonorrhoea test and €165 with HIV, syphilis and hepatitis B.
