Where To Test

Sexual health clinics in Malta

Malta has one public sexual health clinic — the GU Clinic inside Mater Dei Hospital, a short bus ride from Valletta — and its specialists say treatment and counselling there are free to everyone, Maltese and foreign, EU and non-EU. HIV testing needs no appointment. A private hospital group in Sliema also runs a genito-urinary clinic, by appointment and without published prices.

What visitors pay

The Maltese Association of Dermatology and Venereology says that at the GU Clinic in Mater Dei Hospital, treatment and counselling are given free of charge to all — Maltese and foreigners, EU and non-EU alike. That is an unusually clear statement for a visitor, and it is the reason this clinic is the first place to try. Private clinics in Malta publish no prices for STI screening, so ask before you book one.

Testing

The GU Clinic is on the second floor of the outpatient department at Mater Dei Hospital in Msida. It diagnoses and treats sexually transmitted infections and offers HIV counselling and testing with no appointment needed — you go during its opening hours. Patients are also counselled about HIV prevention, including PrEP and PEPSE, though whether the clinic itself prescribes them is not stated. Published opening hours differ between listings, so phone before you go.
