Where To Test

Sexual health clinics in Malaysia

Listings in Malaysia are a community clinic for key populations, a non-profit sexual and reproductive health clinic and a private clinic. None of them states whether visitors are accepted, though the community clinic in Kuala Lumpur says HIV screening needs no name, identity card or passport. Few prices are published, so ask before you go.

PEP in this country

The Malaysian AIDS Council says PEP must be started within 72 hours of a possible exposure. It lists free PrEP through government clinics (in Penang, Klinik Kesihatan Butterworth) and partner organisations, and says private clinics and pharmacies also supply PrEP on prescription. It does not say whether foreign visitors qualify for the free programme. The clinics we list in Kuala Lumpur and Penang say they offer PEP, but none publishes a price. Out of hours, go to a hospital emergency department.

Legal & safety

Human Dignity Trust reports that Malaysia's federal Penal Code criminalises same-sex sexual activity (sections 377A, 377B and 377D), with penalties of up to twenty years' imprisonment and whipping, that state Sharia laws also apply to Muslims, that the gender expression of trans people is criminalised, and that these laws are enforced.
