Where To Test

Sexual health clinics in Kazakhstan

Listings are in Almaty: the city AIDS centre, where testing and HIV treatment are free for citizens registered in the city and an identity document is asked for, and the national dermatology and infectious diseases centre, which publishes prices in tenge for HIV, syphilis and hepatitis tests. A free, anonymous HIV self-test can also be ordered online for delivery in several Kazakh cities.

PEP in this country

The Almaty city AIDS centre's questions page says that within 72 hours of unprotected sex you should see a specialist about post-exposure prophylaxis. Neither it nor any other readable source says where the medicine is dispensed, what it costs or what happens outside the centre's morning-to-late-afternoon hours, so treat this as a starting point and phone the centre.

What visitors pay

Free HIV testing is organised around citizenship and registration rather than need: the Almaty city AIDS centre says the service is free for citizens of Kazakhstan registered in the city, and that you must bring the original of your identity document. Nothing says what a foreign visitor pays, so ask first. The alternative with published prices is the Kazakh Scientific Centre of Dermatology and Infectious Diseases in Almaty, whose price list runs from 2,300 tenge for a syphilis test and 3,508 for an HIV test to 10,000 for a first appointment with a dermatovenereologist, with treatment priced separately.

Testing

A free, anonymous HIV self-test can be ordered online and delivered by courier in Almaty, Astana, Pavlodar, Ust-Kamenogorsk and Karaganda. The service is run by the International Center for AIDS Programs with Global Fund money and asks for a phone number or email only so that the test can be delivered. City AIDS centres also run trust points inside ordinary city polyclinics, which is where most testing outside the centre happens.

City pages carry the local detail: which clinic, which hospital, and what it costs there.

PrEP in Kazakhstan: none of our listed clinics says it supplies PrEP. It can also be ordered for delivery from PrEP Online.
