About

A free, confidential finger-prick HIV and syphilis test in under five minutes, on weekdays in the city centre with no booking, from the charity formerly known as AIDS West; it is not a full STI screen and the charity says it is not a clinic.

This clinic doesn’t advertise itself as LGBTQ+ friendly. Most clinics don’t, so this isn’t a sign that it’s unwelcoming. If you’ve been, tell us how you were treated.

Ireland: good to know

  • PEP in this country. PEP medicine is free in Ireland and must be started within 72 hours. In Galway the HSE lists a full PEP service at the University Hospital Galway sexual health clinic on weekdays by appointment and a PEP starter pack around the clock at the hospital's emergency department. HIV Ireland says an emergency department charges for the attendance itself when you come without a GP referral letter: currently €100 for EU residents and more for non-EU residents.

  • What visitors pay. The public STI clinic at University Hospital Galway says its service is free of charge and takes self-referrals, and HIV Ireland says STI testing is free at public STI/GUM clinics. Neither says whether this applies to short-term visitors, so ask when you phone. HIV Ireland puts the emergency department attendance fee at €100 for EU residents and more for non-EU residents.
