This clinic doesn’t advertise itself as LGBTQ+ friendly. Most clinics don’t, so this isn’t a sign that it’s unwelcoming. If you’ve been, tell us how you were treated.

Canada: good to know

  • PEP in this country. Sexual Health Nova Scotia says to visit an emergency room as soon as possible after an exposure, that PEP must be started within 72 hours, and that the cost of PEP is only covered by the provincial plan (MSI) after a sexual assault; otherwise some private insurance covers it and without insurance a month-long course can cost $900 or more. The Halifax Sexual Health Centre adds that a family doctor or walk-in clinic will not prescribe PEP. The Halifax Infirmary emergency department (1840 Bell Road) is open 24 hours.
  • What visitors pay. Nova Scotia Health says there is no cost to visit its sexual health clinics, which take online bookings released 48 hours ahead; it does not say whether a health card is needed. The non-profit Halifax Sexual Health Centre is free with a valid Canadian provincial health card, but says that without a health card doctor's and lab fees apply, and that the wait for a routine appointment is four to six weeks.
