Where To Test

Sexual health clinics in Bulgaria

What we list in Bulgaria is CheckPoint Sofia, the community centre where rapid tests for HIV and hepatitis B and C are free and anonymous, with no appointment and no personal details taken. It is run by three Bulgarian health organisations and is described by them as the only centre of its kind in the country. Nothing we could read says what a visitor pays for treatment or for PEP, so ask before you are treated.

What visitors pay

Testing at CheckPoint Sofia is free — the centre says plainly that you owe nothing. Bulgaria's LGBTI organisation Deystvie also notes that free antiretroviral treatment is provided through a small number of hospitals. Neither says what someone without Bulgarian health insurance pays for a consultation, for treatment of an infection, or for PEP, so ask the price before you are treated.

Testing

CheckPoint Sofia, at ul. Tsar Samuil 111, is described by the organisations that run it — HepActive, Health Without Borders and the I Foundation — as the only centre of its kind in Bulgaria: anonymous, free testing and counselling for HIV and hepatitis B and C, with a finger-prick sample, a result in about 15 minutes and no personal data collected. It needs no appointment and, unusually for Bulgaria, stays open into the evening: Monday to Friday 12:00–20:00 and Saturday 12:00–18:00. If your exposure was recent, they advise waiting about six weeks before testing.

City pages carry the local detail: which clinic, which hospital, and what it costs there.

PrEP in Bulgaria: none of our listed clinics says it supplies PrEP. It can also be ordered for delivery from PrEP Online.
